I like to have a one-on-one phone discussion at the beginning with each customer. If you're busy, we can do it by email instead.
If you have a previous resume, EMAIL it to me:
Preferred formats: Microsoft Word (DOC, DOCX), PDF, or Plain Text (TXT). If you don't have your resume on your computer or phone, you may photo the hard copy or scan it to PDF format. Then email me the image files or PDFs.
If you don't have an existing resume, I can email you a simple outline as a guide for your rough draft.
If you have a previous cover letter, send it too, because this gives me a fuller picture of how you present yourself. If you don't have a cover letter, I can write one at no extra cost, using the information in your resume.
If you're applying for a specific job, send me the URL link or copy and paste the text of the job announcement into your email. Then I can identify the keywords in the posting and make the connection between the skill sets the company is looking for and the skill sets you have to offer.
Keywords in a job posting are crucial. Your resume needs to target the specific job you're applying for. I will make sure the keywords in the job announcement that match your skill sets appear in your resume. This helps to get your presentation through the screening process known as ATS (Applicant Tracking System). A higher ATS score gives you a better shot at getting a live human resources person to read your presentation.
If you're not yet applying for a specific posted job, then let me know what sort of position you're aiming for. I can point your resume in that direction as a first step. Remember: You can't just email the same resume to dozens of employers. A targeted approach is essential. This, again, is why keywords are so important.
Finished presentations shouldn't exceed two (2) pages, except for federal resumes and CVs. Cover letters shouldn't exceed one (1) page. Employers are most interested in your last three (3) jobs and last 10-15 years of experience.
Employers want to see achievements in your work history, not just duties. If you can give numbers and percentages for your accomplishments - e.g., how much you increased profit year over year - this adds even more weight.
I make references a separate document with contact information for each name shown. Most employers won't ask for references before the interview, so don't offer them until called for.
I routinely delete hobbies, unless they're relevant to your job search. Likewise, I delete reasons for leaving former positions, date of birth, health status, marital status, and children's names and ages. Even at the interview, don't volunteer any personal information the employer hasn't asked for.
The trend today is toward paperless resumes. If you do need to print your documents, use a laser printer, if possible, and plain white 8½ x 11 paper, no special textures or colors. If you mail your documents, use an envelope large enough to keep the pages flat - no folding, clipping, or stapling.
